But what exactly does "handmade" mean? And why does it change everything?

1. Acetate: a living material, integrated into the mass
It all starts with the material. Acetate is a material derived from natural cellulose — unlike the injected plastics used in mass distribution.
At Ultra Limited, the color is not applied to the surface. It is integrated into the mass, layer after layer, thanks to a block process that few people in the world truly master.
Acetate powder is mixed with plasticizers and pigments, then pressed into monochrome sheets by calendering. To obtain complex patterns — tortoiseshell, marbled, gradient, two-tone — at least two different blocks are decomposed and then reassembled. This process can be repeated several times, producing increasingly sophisticated effects.
The final sheets are inspected one by one before moving on to the next step.
2. Plate selection: 3,000 billion possibilities
This is where the story of an Ultra Limited pair truly begins.
Each frame is born from the selection of 8 to 12 acetate plates, studied one by one by artisans according to three criteria: light, contrast, and chromatic balance. With 196 available shades, renewed every six months, the possible combinations amount to 3,000 billion.
Each association is designed to create a pattern that does not yet exist. And that can never be reproduced identically.
3. Pressing: when the material decides for itself
The selected plates are superimposed and assembled under the effect of heat and pressure. It is at this stage that something unique occurs.
The material decides for itself: the plates merge, creating veins, stripes, and internal nuances that do not follow any fixed pattern. This is not printing. This is not painting.
It is the material itself that determines the result.
The same shape. A color never identical.
4. Micrometric milling: the shape follows the color
Once the block is pressed, the shape of the frame is obtained by milling. Each angle, each thickness, each curve is calculated with micrometric precision.
But before starting, each block is evaluated in plan and section — so as not to remove the layers that will determine the final chromatic result.
The shape follows the color. And not the other way around.
It is this principle that distinguishes Ultra Limited from any other industrial manufacturing.
5. Polishing: 41 days for a surface recognizable to the touch
Roughing, sanding, polishing, tumbling finish. Different stages, different materials for each pass.
The entire process takes over 41 days.
The result is not easily explained. It is felt. A deep, warm, living surface, unlike any other — and recognizable to the touch even before seeing it.
6. The final color: unique, for your eyes only
The Ultra Limited color is incorporated into the mass, plate after plate. It changes with the light, the angle, the time. Tortoiseshell, gradients, two-tone, marbled, animal prints — each pattern is born from the physical combination of different plates.
And since each pressing is unique, two frames of the same model will never be identical.
